Curriculum
Children at The Gurukul are being prepared
for the ICSE. The unique aspect of the Gurukul
is how the programs are delivered. All students are encouraged
to analyze, discuss, explore, question and use information from other
available resources - e.g. the internet and encyclopedias. We
use a wide variety of text books sourced from the UK - these are
not issued to the
children but are kept
in the school. The practical aspects of the curriculum are used
to teach the theoretical concepts. (e.g. - using the
outdoors in a science lesson) Children learn about plants and
animal life, not only through the books but by actually observing and
interacting with the outdoors. Rote learning is discouraged and
students will not have to rewrite what has already been
written. It must be made clear that students learn more and
make learning a life long skill when they are having fun and are
active participants in their learning. This is very much encouraged
at The Gurukul. Additionally,
students learn at different rates, and to have all students at the
same place, whether they are at The Gurukul
or other schools is unrealistic. Comparisons between students
and schools in terms of progress of the curriculum also is not
realistic - and the final test of this is whether students know how
to learn and are able to write standardized tests as set out by the
governing bodies. The Gurukul is a fun
place to learn and students enjoy coming to school and are happy when
they leave the school. Stress Free environment for students as well
as parents is something we work towards every day.

Extra Curricular Activities

We provide a wide range of co-curricular activities,
as part of the entire learning experience. Activities offered range
from Indian and Western Classical Music and Dance, pottery, cookery,
needlework, yoga, meditation, swimming and arts and crafts. The Gurukul was the first school in Kerala to offer Art of Living classes (by Sri Sri Ravishankar’s Vyakti Vikas Kendra) to
the children. Dance is taught by a student of Ms. Daksha
Seth, India's premier
contemporary dancer. Indian theatre, puppetry and mask making are
taught by Abhinaya Drama School of Sri Raghuthuman, formerly with the National School of
Drama, Delhi. Most of
these activities are compulsory and included in the fees, though some
are optional and billed additionally.
Children are given their own plots in the school
compound to grow their vegetables and flowers. Children, along with
their parents, planted trees all around the compound.
